OK, looks like I got a little excited when I posted about the new album from Regurgitator’s Quan Yeomans. Apparently this has been out for weeks.
Guess I’m out of touch.

Dogs' Future in the Hands of State Parliament →
Probably a little melodramatic, but still worrying for Dogs supporters.
Depending on who you asked yesterday the Western Bulldogs were facing extinction, or maybe just adding a little political grandstand to the facilities at the redeveloped Whitten Oval.
Victoria’s Parliament will today vote on a motion from Greens member Colleen Hartland to overturn the State Government’s...

Quan of Regurgitator to Drop Solo Album "The...
Just happened to log into MySpace for the first time since forever last night to see this tidbit:
Quan is a short extract from a love letter, an Amateur (from the latin ‘Amator’-‘Lover’, from Amare ‘to love’) ineptly following the natural course of things since forever.
Apparently a photon that begins it’s life in the centre of the sun spends...

Ooops, looks like I mucked this one up a little. Ten’s all-sports channel is to debut in April, not November.

The Grammar of Fun (The New Yorker) →
Profile of Cliff Bleszinski, design director at Epic Games. Some quotes:
Ten feet away was a red Hummer H3. Nearby was a Lotus Elise, and next to it a pumpkin-orange Porsche. Many of the cars had personalized plates: “PS3CODER” (a reference to Sony’s PlayStation3), “EPICBOY,” “GRSOFWAR.”

Channel Ten to Launch 24-Hour Sports Channel →
Apparently Channel Ten have been buying up the rights to sporting events in Monaco last week in order to fill a free-to-air 24-hour sports channel, to be launched next month in April next year.
In recent times, they’ve acquired the rights to the IPL (Twenty20 cricket), swimming, the NFL (U.S. football), MLB (U.S. baseball) and the NBA (U.S. basketball). Added to their existing rights to...

Converting a color to grayscale →
I’ve looked for this formula, on average, once a year for the past five or so years. It’s useful for determining what colour text to display over a colour: if y > 0.5, display white; otherwise, display black.
Hopefully by posting it here, I’ll be able to find it a bit easier next time.
// y = luminance
// r, g and b = the red, green and blue components of
// a colour
y =...

Internet Filtering
Family First Senator Steve Fielding wants hardcore pornography and fetish material blocked under the Government’s plans to filter the internet, sparking renewed fears the censorship could be expanded well beyond “illegal material”.
Net filters may block porn and gambling sites (The Age)
I was going to go on a rant about internet filters, which aren’t only offensive...

Kangaroo Meat
Turns out it’s not farmed, but hunted.
Markets for meat and skins are limited and are adequately supplied from the existing rangeland harvest (i.e. kangaroo hunting). Farmed kangaroos could not compete successfully in these circumstances because of high costs associated with establishing and operating a kangaroo farming enterprise.

Ideas? →
From Paul Graham, one of the partners in venture capital firm Y Combinator:
If we’ve learned one thing from funding so many startups, it’s that they succeed or fail based on the qualities of the founders.
Now I’m not going to claim I know more about what makes a company successful or not than this guy, but surely ideas have more than a little impact on the success or...

htmlspecialchars in JavaScript
Simple function for HTML-encoding characters (i.e. transforming characters such as <, > and & into HTML entities):
function htmlspecialchars(s)
{
var temp = document.createElement('div');
temp.appendChild(document.createTextNode(s));
return temp.innerHTML;
}
Inspired by the PHP function of the same name.

Looks like a good description of what’s going on in the US at the moment.
As my old man will attest, I’ve got little idea when it comes to the machinations of anything to do with money (other than knowing it can be used to buy beer, food and accommodation), but things like this always remind me of a time I spoke with a financial adviser at one of these new-fangled ethical investment...

You’ve got to be fucking kidding me…
Tribal beats and subtle beautiful melodies weave amongst contorting Technicolor drone-scapes while preaching distorted-vocals scream for dear hope herself… Fuck Buttons straddle you between the wall of sound that lies between the beginning of destruction and the end of birth.
