Vodafone will soon announce it is selling the Mini 9 on a $70 a month plan with a 5GB monthly data allowance and no upfront cost. The laptop includes a built-in 3G modem - a first in the flourishing netbook market that was pioneered by the Asus EEE PC.
$70/month over the term of a two year contract1 comes out at $1,680, meaning you’re paying more than $1000 for two years of 3G broadband internet. Sounds like a lot until you consider that Virgin’s competing mobile broadband product will set you back almost $1000 over the same period, and Vodafone’s own product clocks in at almost $1,200.
If it weren’t for the fact I’ve already got a laptop and iPhone, I’d give this some serious consideration.
1 This two year contract length was just pulled out of my arse, of course.

By day, he works for ABC TV as a web developer. By night, he plays bass guitar in Look Who's Toxic. He also runs a little Unix Timestamp conversion site. There are plenty of other things he should be doing, but most of the time he's dreaming of what he'll do when he grows up while watching bad Star Trek spin-offs.
