blog.craiga.id.au — The Language of Computer Science, part 1

In the same way I’m sure the word ‘sacrosanct’ wouldn’t have been part of the average footy fan’s lexicon before the phrase “the head is sacrosanct” was coined, many of the words commonly used in computer science strike me as being a bit retarded. I’m sure many aren’t even words.

So, I hereby pledge to avoid using these words and start using their more sensible counterparts:

deprecate
obsolete
instantiate
construct
create
performant
performs adequately
truncate
abbreviate
cut off

If you’ve got any more suggestions, let me know.

About Craig Anderson

By day, he works for ABC TV as a web developer. By night, he plays bass guitar in Look Who's Toxic. He also runs a little Unix Timestamp conversion site. There are plenty of other things he should be doing, but most of the time he's dreaming of what he'll do when he grows up while watching bad Star Trek spin-offs.
